I will always stand with LGBTQIA+ folks, especially now, when queer communities are increasingly threatened by empowered bigotry. Trans kids deserve the same care, protection, and opportunity to thrive that all our kids deserve.Everyone who puts their lives and wellbeing on the line to serve our communities deserves support and care. If you're not connected to military families, it's easy to miss how little support they're getting compared to what their service and sacrifice deserves. And my work supporting victims of the school shooting in which my nephew was injured revealed to me the extent to which our first responders, who are often traumatized by the violence they witness and then re-traumatized by having to go right back into similar situations, lack the support they need to heal. These are funding choices made at the state level, and I would choose better support for those who serve.Everyone who tries to grow a small business deserves a real shot at becoming a local success story because when our small businesses thrive, our communities thrive. We need robust and meaningful community economic development, including incentives for family-owned businesses in our most marginalized communities and substantial support for small farmers. Too often the real muscle behind calls for deregulation are massive corporations run by people who’ve never set foot in our communities, who want to pollute and extract and abuse, and I will never support removing those protections from our communities — but I absolutely support taking a hard look at red-tape regulations that needlessly hamper local business without providing significant protections.

From Hadley Overlook to Hamilton Hill, this district is interconnected and interdependent, and everybody matters. I intend to be a state senator for everybody — always listening, always curious, always committed to making sure that directly impacted people have a seat at the table: from family businesses to veterans and first responders, from trans kids to small farmers.

As someone who’s been pregnant and given birth, who’s managed my own reproductive health in consultation with my doctors my entire adult life, and as a public-interest attorney who’s seen first-hand the devastating outcomes when politicians and abusers use forced pregnancy to control women, I am an adamant supporter of reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.Passing the New York Health Act would be one of my top priorities as your State Senator. The New York Health Act would establish a single-payer, universal healthcare system across New York, guaranteeing healthcare for every New Yorker. It would eliminate premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and prescription drug costs; and it would expand coverage to include dental, vision, mental health, and much more. It would allow us all to seek care from providers we choose, rather than having to stay “in-network.”And while we keep pushing for a universal, single-payer healthcare system, there are immediate steps we can take, like proposals to cap excessive hospital billing and bring down out-of-pocket costs for everyday care. We also need to invest in the people holding the system together: our nurses, EMS workers, and rural providers — because access doesn’t mean much if there’s no one there to provide care.

I will always stand up to protect reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy and make sure New York remains a place where we can make our own decisions about our bodies.I’m also a strong supporter of the New York Health Act because I believe everyone deserves coverage without worrying about cost or access.

I have also seen first-hand the fear that families in our district face, that a knock on the door, a traffic stop, or even showing up to work could tear their lives apart. That’s happening right now all over our district, and it’s not who we should be.A system that separates families, targets those who are working and contributing, and creates fear instead of safety is broken at its core. We need to keep immigration enforcement out of schools, hospitals, and places of worship, guarantee legal representation so people aren’t navigating the system alone, and make sure people feel safe seeking medical care or reporting a crime.I have also been directly impacted by another major safety issue: community gun violence. On November 30, 2021, a 15-year-old boy used the handgun his parents failed to secure to shoot 10 fellow students and a teacher at his high school in Oxford, Michigan; brutally ending four lives, injuring seven more, and plunging hundreds into a lifetime of trauma. My nephew was one of the injured, and the experience propelled our family through trauma and transformation into staunch public advocates for gun safety legislation.I am deeply committed to evidence-backed prevention, including safe storage, red flag laws, robust multidisciplinary threat assessment, and school-based social-emotional support and education.&nbsp;I’m also committed to meaningful support for first responders, who show enormous courage in the moment of crisis, running toward the danger and damage as everyone else runs away. For many, that means experiencing deep trauma — trauma that comes back when they return to jobs that require confronting similar triggers again and again. We need to do right by our first responders and ensure that the care and treatment they need because of the duties they have performed is fully funded.

We can make New York a beacon and a fortress against Trump’s brutal assault on our immigrant neighbors and the rule of law, and at the same time ensure that local law enforcement has the structure and support to succeed in keeping the peace in our communities.

PROTECTING OUR COMMUNITIES

I support capping utility bills at a percentage of income and exploring other creative ways to ensure that New York families are not being unfairly squeezed by big utility companies.We all know Saratoga and Schenectady Counties are in the middle of a housing crisis. I support Assemblymember Carrie Woerner’s plan to incentivize renovating older properties to create more reasonably-priced housing: with union labor, vastly improved energy efficiency, and reflecting the historic character of our beloved neighborhoods, it’s a win-win-win. I will collaborate with state and local leaders to build coalitions to deliver real solutions to our housing crisis, including support for first-time home-buyers and protections for both renters and small landlords.Single-payer universal healthcare in New York would be a crucial piece of the affordability puzzle, so <a href="https://www.sarahfornysenate.com/issues/healthcare-without-fear" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">passing the New York Health Act</a> is one of my highest priorities.No one fights harder for working families than organized labor. I’m proud of the endorsements I’ve earned from 1199 SEIU and IBEW Local 236, and I will continue to stand with labor unions as they advocate not just for affordability but for quality of life.<h4></h4>

PRACTICAL PLANS TO LOWER COSTS

Keeping our heads above water gets harder and harder while billionaires buy bigger and bigger yachts. But there are actions we can take at the state level to help working families stay afloat while requiring the ultra-rich to pay their fair share.

COST-OF-LIVING IN CRISIS

At the same time, more people are being drawn to communities like ours in search of climate havens that will be receiving residents of other states migrating to more temperate communities.I support major investments in clean, affordable energy so we can lower utility bills while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. We should be leading on things like expanding community solar so people can save without installing panels, weatherizing older homes so families aren’t paying to heat and cool the outdoors, upgrading our grid so it’s reliable during extreme weather, and building housing near jobs and infrastructure so growth doesn’t push people out.&nbsp;We can also get ahead of growth by strengthening and improving safety on our roads, implementing traffic calming measures, clean water systems, and public infrastructure, and making sure our small towns and cities aren’t overwhelmed or priced out. If we do this right, we can create good-paying jobs, keep costs down, and make sure the next generation can actually afford to stay here and thrive here, safely and collaboratively.When we think about climate challenges, we tend to focus on things like weather, but ticks and tick-borne illness are among the most impactful symptoms of climate change we’re facing here in the Northeast, threatening our ability to enjoy our precious time in the outdoors and profoundly impairing the health of those affected. When the federal government is gutting health and science research, New York should be picking up the slack when it comes to funding research on tick mitigation and the prevention and treatment of tick-borne illness, perhaps in collaboration with other affected states.
