We also need to invest in the people holding the system together–our nurses, EMS workers, and rural providers–because access doesn’t mean much if there’s no one there to provide care.

I will always stand up to protect reproductive freedom and make sure New York remains a place where people can make their own decisions about their care.I’m also a strong supporter of the New York Health Act because I believe everyone deserves coverage without worrying about cost or access.

That’s happening right here all over our district, and it’s not who we should be.I believe we need to move toward ending the role of ICE in our communities as we know it—because a system that separates families, targets people who are contributing and working, and creates fear instead of safety is broken at its core. The Dignity Not Detention Act is a key piece of this protection. This is a critical piece of legislation that would end New York’s role in civil litigation detention and phase out private detention centers, prioritizing humane treatment over incarceration.In the meantime, there are real steps we can take right now. I support the New York for All Act because I believe our local communities should be a place of trust, not fear. We need to keep immigration enforcement out of schools, hospitals, and places of worship, guarantee legal representation so people aren’t navigating the system alone, and make sure people feel safe seeking medical care or reporting a crime. Protecting immigrant families is about protecting the strength and stability of our entire community.I have also been directly impacted by another major safety issue: community gun violence. From mass shooting events to safe storage, common sense legislative measures are essential to keeping firearms out of the hands of people who intend to do harm. In addition to these measures, funding social emotional supports for adolescents is central to any efforts to reduce community gun violence.

I believe we need to move toward ending the role of ICE in our communities as we know it—because a system that separates families, targets people who are contributing and working, and creates fear instead of safety is broken at its core. That means building union-constructed housing, supporting first-time buyers, and making sure renters have a fair shot at staying in the communities they love.<h4></h4>

PRACTICAL PLANS TO LOWER COSTS

At the same time, more people are being drawn to communities like ours in search of climate havens that will be receiving residents of other states migrating to more temperate communities.I support major investments in clean, affordable energy so we can lower utility bills while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. We should be leading on things like expanding community solar so people can save without installing panels, weatherizing older homes so families aren’t paying to heat the outdoors, upgrading our grid so it’s reliable during extreme weather, and building housing near jobs and infrastructure so growth doesn’t push people out.&nbsp;We can also get ahead of growth by strengthening and improving safety on our roads, implementing traffic calming measures, clean water systems, and public infrastructure, and making sure our small towns and cities aren’t overwhelmed or priced out. If we do this right, we can create good-paying jobs, keep costs down, and make sure the next generation can actually afford to stay here and thrive here, safely and collaboratively.
